Opening Ceremonies

13 02 2010

  • Nikki Yanofski…Canada’s newest super star, sings national anthem.
  • Micaele Jean, Canada’s governer general, is such a class act- stunning.
  • Canada’s plaid scarves…I want one…hitting up HBC tomorow!
  • Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams– bonafide superstars (a little too much lipsyncing, but i will look past that for tonight)
  • The giant, shining, bear puppet
  • the whales across the floor…beautiful, amazing visually.
  • The hanging centre piece becomes trees… Sarah Mclachlan sings while Canadian ballet shows off some serious talent
  • The Peter Pan boy flys across the prairies
  • Cirque du Soleil skiiers/snowboarders perform infront a mountain backdrop
  • The fiddlers…insane. See, in canada, we dont just have fiddlers and tappers…they are both…and they are East-Coast-hipster-chic….love it. (I feel like Alexander McQueen wouldve been proud…)
  • Crazy, yet eloquaint ranting Canadian (remeniscent of the “I am canadian” beer rant…slightly more tasteful and rhyming) – kinda cool.
  • KD Lang…a surprise! – Singing the most beautiful of Canada’s anthems…”Hallelujuah” by Leonard Cohen
  • Olympic flag bearers: Betty Fox, Donald Sutherland, Anne Murray, Bobby Orr…nice line up (no Wayne Gretzky…must be saved for later…)
  • Final torch bearers: Catriona Le May Doan (I’ve met her…and she’s…just the way she looks, incredible), Steve Nash, Nancy Greene and Wayne Gretzky (You had to see that coming!)

A great night…merging Canadian culture from East to West, from history into the future. Welcome world…let the games begin!

The program was gorgeous, as an American Indian, I loved the inclusion of 1st Nation. The part with the Eagle, Buffalo and Bear was awesome. The big Polar Bear was breath taking.

Listening to Donald Sutherland do the voiceover I was inspired and I looked up Pauline Johnson. I’m very impressed with her writing.

I have a question about the ‘fiddlers’ part of the program. What was the poem that Donald Sutherland was quoting during the fiddlers section. I loved the words but couldn’t find the poem. Thank you 🙂
