New TV Show Alert…

16 10 2010

Guess which show is getting (destroyed by) the American treatment next?

Battle of the Blades.

Yes, ABC has announced an ‘exciting new series’ entitled “Skating with the Stars” with the same premise as Battle of the Blades, except it will be celebrities skating with professional skaters. So basically, all the “stars” who couldnt get a gig with Dancing with the Stars or Celebrity Apprentice will end up lacing up skates to try and revive their careers.

First Dragons Den, now BAttle of the Blades… the CBC is pumping out hit shows that die in the States. What’s next? Peter Mansbridge and George Strombo taking ove rthe Today show?

Oh, and the ‘celebrity’ cast will be revealed during DWTS November 2nd. Trying to target the same audience are we?

Will you watch?

DWTS recap

30 03 2010

So apparantly I missed the memo that it was going to be a “reveal the inner diva’ night on DWTS. The “stars” claws were OUT this week…and it was ugly.

Usually, ABC goes to great length to show their dance couples having fun (going to skating rinks, donating to charities, visiting their homes…etc) in candy-coated, mickey-mouse pre-dance vignettes. But last night, quite the opposite. WE get it, dancing is hard. But there are people who work 14 hours a day with a boss that berates them and dangles their income infront of their faces…infact, there are millions of people in that situation. SO dont insult us…the stress of taking dance lessons is not even close to justifying that behaviour.

Let me break it down:

Shannen and Mark– Doherty (inevitably) used the judges critiques to her advantage: whining about it being toooo hard. Mark stood his ground and pushed her to attempt the choreography anyways (somehow she turned THAT around to make it a unanimous partner decision…) The dance was….fine. Nothing earthshattering, and considering she was the first to dance…forgettabble after a long 2 hours of dance.

Aiden and Edyta– Here’s where it started to get nasty. Aiden gets frustrated and lashes out on Edyta. Public admonishment is humiliating, and it made Edyta cry…and like a good little pro, she apologizes for HER weaknesses and they move on. Absolutly ridiculous…especially from an ‘unknown’ (cmon….he’s no kate gosselin.) to a consumate professional. At any rate, Edyta got her revenge by ‘accidentally’ elbowing him in the face during the dance. Overall, he was just OK… but I hope he rides off into his previous oblivion soon.

Evan and Anna- I have a theory. I think that Evan was holding out on us a little bit last week, to prove that dancing is ‘still hard for him’ even though he’s a figure skater (dancing…..on skates). Last night he showed his stuff with the Jive, and proved that he’s also a (professional) performer. Bes tof the night thus far…and at least he doesnt abuse his partner (although, I’m sure he’d rather be paired with Max…just saying).

Niecy and Louis– Um, I love this woman. it’s official. And not in an “oh isnt that curvy lady funny trying to dance with the pretty girls” kind of way. She is a talented dancer who is aware of her body movements, she has an engaging personality that permeates onto the dance floor, and she has more likeability than any gal on the show (lets face it, Pam An isnt a female favourite, nor is the Pussy Cat Doll, and Kate is…not exactly cuddly). Her dance was great…let me reiterate…her DANCE was great, and she will continue to get better.

Jake and Chelsie– I’ll give our guy Jake a few small props for being totally inexperienced and going for it (for fame and money….but nonetheless). He also had a brief diva moment “telling not asking” to change the dance (vienna is rubbing off on him?) But this dance was more suited to his awkward and cheesy personality. He jived in his flood pants, slicked hair and white socks- and he was much better than last week.

Buzz and Ashley– oy vey. I dont have too much to say about this. It’s a real shame. Not that life has to stop at 80….but maybe competitive dancing does? Just like NASA wouldnt send him to the moon again, maybe something more age appropriate and less public is the better alternative. On a lighter note, I was expecting him to dance to “fly me to the moon” last week…but the cornballs at ABC held off, and pulled out the irony this week instead. sigh.

Nicole and Derek– Goes to great lengths to remind us she’s a ‘singer’ not a dancer. right. Anyways, at least this couple gets along. I’m sure rumours will fly…considering they are 2 attractive people recently out of long term relationships. She’s a great dancer, she wears less clothes than Pam An and Derek is a fan favourite…she’ll be in the finals no question. And her jive was good…but 10’s from the judges in week 2 is premature.

Erin and Maks- Have already started a rumour mill firestorm with their relationship, and it’s kind of cute. They are two opposites…but she has had a calming effect on Maks. She yells at him throughout rehearsal, but in a friendlier respectful way (although the judges call her out for her behaviour). Her dancing is improving, if she continues to work on her coordination and grace…she could be around for awhile. I’m liking them.

Pam- An and Damien– gets into Marilyn Monroe Character (or Anna Nicole Smith…) for her Foxtrot. The judges love using sexual innuendo on her….which would be cringe worthy if she wasnt such a good sport about it. Here’s a gal that knows her persona and embraces it with every breath and bat of an eyelash. Love it or hate it….at least she plays along. Her dance was good this week, and perhaps more family-friendly for the voting public.

Chad and Cheryl- Ok, we were so wrapped up in Maks and erin that we missed THIS one! Flirting, stealing a kiss during the performance, Cheryl not denying any chemistry… Cmon TMZ, do your homework! Chad is a perfect speciman, but he needs work on becoming an intuitive dancer. he still has trouble knowing what to do with his limbs- so he comes across as rigid and awkward. He took the criticism and terrible scores to heart and could hardly speak afterwards. Sad, but no worries Chad…BUzz and Kate should leave before you.

Kate and Tony- Not alot of people get a warm fuzzy feeling from Kate G, and this show was supposed to change that for her. But her lack of talent and diva behaviour is ruining her chances. So much so, that Tony up and quit on her this week. But he came to his senses (ABC waved his contract in his face) and finished the week (knowing he wouldnt have to endure it much longer…) the dance was more painful than watching BUzz….the 80 year old. This woman has no performance ability, forgot her choreography and substituted “bouncing” for footwork. part of me always feels bad for people when they embarass themselves on live TV… and I’m sure she’s got some redeeming qualities, but give the woman her paycheque and make her go away.

Tonight is the first elimination night, my prediction is either Buzz or Kate. I will go with Buzz (not that he was the worst this week…) but he doesnt have 8 children voting for him as a homework assignment.

DWTS Recap

22 03 2010

There were more stars in the audience than on the dancefloor…thus the charm of Dancing with the Vaguely Familiar.

Recap of the Night:

  • Chad O- has a relatively affable personality, and he’s got Cheryl (the little tyrant!). Judges thought he was so-so…and dont be embarassed, I dont know who he is either.
  • Shannon Doherty-not to be confused with Pete Doherty, although I can tell you who I’d rather party with… when did Shannon become so dull? A nice little storyline about making her ailing daddy proud…but that’s been done. I want the Diva back.
  • Neicy Nash- a breath of fresh air on this show. everyone is tucked and airbrushed, but also wound so tightly by their PR reps…Neicy is entertaining! Okay, yah…obviously she’s bigger than the usual model-suspects ont his show…but she also has a big personality. If this girl continues to move well…she could become a fan-fav.
  • Erin Andrews- no mention of the hotel room scandal, whew. Couldve been awkward and she couldve used the pity card early on for votes…instead, she used her quirky sarcasm and ability to keep up with Max. Rumours are already flying about their relationship off-dancefloor…ineveitable, they are both tall and tanned….what do you expect!
  • Jake Pavelka- Anyone else kinda sick of his story splashed all over TV? Cmon ABC…you should be dumping him and plugging the new TV careers of scorned cast offs or even Ali (the new bachelorette). Thats not to say there werent plenty of bachelor (ette) cast members in the crowd…they were everywhere! At any rate…Jake was handsome but awkward, surprise to anyone?
  • Buzz Aldrin- this was more difficult to watch than watching Jake cry over Jillian last season. I felt like i shouldnt be watching it. The man is a legend….and they love throwing every space euphemism in the book at him…but the whole thing was just awkward. i have no more words really…
  • Evan Lyshechuk– anyone else get an elitist vibe from this guy? Is it because his personal costumer is Vera WAng? Is it the 2 pounds of gold around neck? Or is it the snide remark referencing Evgeni Plushenko he made in jest to his Russian partner? It’s going to take a while for me to awrm up to him…but i’m sure he’ll stick around.
  • Nicole SHerzinger– we find her in her natural habitat…the recording studio. wait! the recording studio is where she feels most at home?! I thought the whole point of the PCD was that….they werent selling ‘the vocal’, they were selling a ‘performance’. hmmmm. anyways, of course she cleans up nicely and no surprise, the favourite of the night for the judges. Sigh…
  • Kate Gosselin– I thought she would be better than she was…not that I’m complaining. Any one else hate her MORE with the new hair? at least it was ‘mom hair’ and not ‘mom trying too hard’ hair. Moving on, she was not channeling the sexy in her hair…she was as stiff as her personality. yikes.
  • Aiden Turner- has the sex appeal and the accent…but no natural ability for dance. but he did show up to practice with flowers…swoon. Worst of the night point-wise.
  • Pam Anderson– an enigma. At heart, a good ole fashioned canadian girl, with a sense of humour. But as soon as she’s ‘on’…she turns into the bombshell maven of dirty thoughts. I dont know how much appeal she will have with the family viewing audience (husbands pretending to avert the eyes, wives secretly judging…kids sent to bed.)

Overall, not a bad evening. Brooke was forgettable (but at least she wasnt Samantha), the ‘Stars’ now assemble in the Celebri-quarium instead of backstage, and the judges scores are revealed in a new graphic (ooooo!). Nothing ground breaking, but at leat it’s not another Bachelor behind the scenes special.

DWTS Monday

22 03 2010

Monday night redemption! The past 2 monday nights have been absolutly unwatchable…but tonight, is THE night ladies and gents. DWTS returns! (incidentally, Bachelor Jake has spent more time on TV than Regis Philbin and Ryan Seacrest combined in the past year…)

Here’s my DWTS pre-cap:

things to watch-

  • A new host. Remember? That insipid ‘reporter’ whats-her-face has gone on to greener pastures. Tonight marks the premiere of the new host Brooke Burke…cast partially for her ability to wear the same wardrobe as the ex-host.
  • New pro-dancer: He’s dancing with Pam- An…depending on his persuasion, thats the best gig for a male dancer  besides dancing with Evan Lysechuk.
  • Cha Cha and Viennese Waltz are the two dances featured tonight. really? They better be building a seriously supportive bra for Pam An if she’s tackling the Cha Cha…yikes.
  • I’ll give you 1 guess as to which one of those dances Buzz Aldrin will select. (and how long will it take for a ‘Moonwalk’ joke? I give it til the opening…)
  • You KNOW mama Gosselin will want to build her reputation as America’s hottest (if by HOT she means scorned) mom…she’ll likely ‘wow’ the judges with a hot Cha Cha.
  • Vienna will totally be in the audience …you wont miss her, she’ll get alot of camera time.
  • Bruno will make an inappropriate comment about Pam-An’s…trademark.
  • Evan Lysechuk will be fantastic…surprise surprise…but will make a BIG deal about how skating is TOTALLY different than dancing.
  • You will see alot of Nicole Sherzinger…they can recycle Karina’s outfits. How handy.

Tune in for the 2 hour premiere tonight, 8pm ABC/CTV

LOTS of post-show reaction, so check back in after the show!

DWTS Pairs Announcement

2 03 2010

We’ve seen the cast of ‘celebs’…now here are the pairings for the momentus event:

  • Kate Goselin and Tony
  • Erin Andrews and Maks
  • Buzz Aldrin and Ashley
  • Pam Anderson and Damien
  • Shannon Doherty and Mark
  • Niecy Nash and Louis
  • Chad and Cheryl
  • Jake Pavelka and Chelsie
  • Nicole Sherzinger and Derek
  • Aiden and Edyta
  • Evan Lysachek and Anna

Derek always gets the “hot” one, Cheryl hasnt had a good partner since Gilles (Wayne Newton doesnt count…), Evan and Anna are a cute pair, Jake lands the cute/hot/blonde…Deja Vu? Wouldve loved to see Shannon Doherty try to act like a diva with Maks– she got off easy! Gotta tell ya, I will miss Lacey and Karina this season, they are two of the more interesting pros…and this cast is bit….vanilla (minus Pam Anderson…she’s anything but!)

Tune in March 22nd for the Kate Goselin hour…I mean…premier.

Bachelor Recap

8 02 2010

Hometown Date 1: NY Gia

Wow this girl is insecure. I actually like that she has a more critical eye of the process and of Jake. Her family is little…off-beat, and I didnt see a huge connection between her parents and Jake. But her brother did threaten to cut his legs off…awww. cute.

Hometown date 2: Ali

hold the presses! I thought her hometown was San Fran? oh…ok, she explains this is her REAL hometown(I guess they couldnt do San Fran again…was this a fake hometown?). Her idea of a romantic ‘stroll down memory lane’ soon turns really morbid as they visist the home of her recently dead grandmother. yikes.

Hometown date 3: Tenley

As expected, a down-to-earth midwestern family in the suburbs. Tenley shows her dancing skills (is this the talent portion of the competition?) and they meet her very cautious family. Of all the dates, Jake seems most open and comfortable with this family (I still think Jake and Tenley are somehow related…they are like the same person). Tenley could probably stop bringing up her deadbeat ex-husband.

Hometown date 4: Vienna

We knew this was going to be crazy. And yes, the relationship she has with her father is weird (at best). the strangest part is how emotional they all get over her…the mother actually said “oh, I hear vienna…sorry, I’m gonna cry” She’s not a 6 year old coming home from over-night camp…! Of course, Jake has to try and impress her father, they bond over his harley…but then he messes up by getting caught ‘in the act’ in Vienna’s childhood room. ouch.

then the bombshell of the night (previewed and speculated ad nauseum)

I used to really like Ali . Then last week, I noticed her obsession with the terms : “I’m so excited”,  “like” and “uhmmmm” and her inability to speak with her mouth open. I also noticed her immaturity creeping up on her (acting like a high-schooler jealous of Vienna, but never acting on her threats to approach her and Jake…)

Tonight, I’m thinking…she’s either really dumb…or really…smart (?!) She staged a coup with her decision ( 45 minute indecision) to leave Jake for a ‘job she loves’… but here is my assessment of this decision:

Reasons why Ali chose to ‘leave’:

  • more camera time (taking up a good hour of our time this episode)
  • more Jake time (an hour OUR time is like….20 hours of Jake time)
  • A quicker answer (by approaching him one on one- she could have gotten a sign or confession of his love…a sly trick)
  • A new, ‘new’ job (is she the next Bachelorette?)
  • If she decided to stay after this debacle…she would be showing her devotion (over the other girls)
  • Let’s face it…she’s not really gone. She now gets to play the role of the potential wild card, or the loyal friend giving advice in the end.
  • she drew the short straw…someone had to create drama this week! (I mean…besides Vienna’s dad)

I gotta say…by the next monday, she’s gonna hate her job (like every other ‘advertising account manager’ in history) and watch 3 girls in bikinis walk the beaches of the carribbean with her man. That’s gonna be one heck of a depressing monday.

So no rose ceremony…Jake is whisking Vienna, Tenley and Gia away to the islands next week— and we have NOT seen/heard the last of Ali…guaranteed.
