Friday TV Tidbits

18 06 2010

iiiit’s Friday! What you really want is a tidbit of gossip and TV news to take with you to that BBQ and pool party this weekend. You need a sure-fire conversation starter and something that will get you alot of instant friends poolside.

You’re in luck…

The Bachelor Pad…is basically the new reality show that mixes Big Brother with Bachelor has-beens and cast-offs. The cast of players has beenkept fairly hush-hush…but alas…

I have the OFFICIAL cast list. You’re welcome…

Kiptyn Locke – Cute one from Jillian’s season
Wes Hayden- Cheater from Jillian’s season
Natalie Getz- Jason’ season
Dave Good
Jessie Sulidis- Jake’s season
Tenley Molzahn- Too good for this but…Jake’s season
Nikki Kaapke
Juan Barbieri- Jillian
Gia Allemand- NY-er from Jake’s season
Craig McKinnon – Ali’s season
Jonathan Novack – Weatherman
Elizabeth Kitt – Jake’s season
Ashley Elmore – Jake’s  season
Jesse Beck – Ali’s season
Jesse Kovacs – Jillian’s season
Michelle Kujawa – the crazy dilusional Michelle from Jake’s season
Krisily Kennedy – Charlie O’Connell’s season
Gwen Gioia – Aaron Buerge’s season
Peyton Wright – Andy Baldwin’s season

All of these rose-less wannabes will inhabit a mansion and compete in challenges, where they will also be voted out of the ‘Pad’. It’s sad. And unoriginal. But it will work…because you know there’s going to be a hottub, catfights and bikini bodies.

March Madness…

19 03 2010

I hope you like basketball.

That’s what’s on tonight…everywhere. We’ve got Raptors, CIS playoffs and March Madness.

My suggestion for tonight is to go for a nice loooong walk, shoot a few hoops and pick 1 of 3 basketball games to fall asleep to.

March Madness. I’ll tell you what makes me MAD in March…cancelling shows for basketball games! Oh and surprise surprise, guess what “won the night” last night in ratings? Basketball. I wonder why….

Have a great TV Night…I’m digging up my old VHS of Space Jam…THAT was entertaining basketball 🙂

Lazy Friday Tidbits

12 03 2010

I could exert alot of energy complaining about last night’s American Idol…But it’s Friday. and I just dont have the chutzpah.

I do however have a few interesting points of conversation to talk about. It’s Friday, so here are some things to think about this afternoon, instead of whatever else you may be doing (or take your mind off the fact that there are a few undeserving 16 year olds who have a chance to wear the Idol crown this season)

  • Heigl is done. I swear I was JUST (not at all) missing her. reports are saying she was supposed to be back for the March 1st episode after taking time off to ‘bond’ with her new daughter (focus on quitting the death-sticks). But March 1st came and went…no Heigl comeback storyline. It would be ridiculous to bring her back at this point, theres only 4 episodes left in the season and it’s simply not enough time to make us care about her again. If you want to see her, you’ll have to invest 8 bucks to see one of her amusing attempts at movie-stardom.
  • It’s daylight savings. Clocks FORWARD this weekend…one hour closer to warm weather and mosquitos.
  • Megan Fox says she has “zero confidence”. My motivation to get up in the morning, or ever step out of my house again just plummetted.
  • It’s safe to say the attempt to remake We Are The World was a bit of a bust…overproduced, over-dramatic, random and not well-timed. Well, Canadian stars just released a similar effort, getting together in Bryan Adams home-studio (thats sooooo rockstar!) to record K’naans “Waving Flag“…and it is EPIC! Check it out, or download it on itunes.
Musicians include: Avril, Hedley, Knaan, Sam Roberts, Nelly Furtado, Bieber, Drake, Nikki Yanofsky, Julie Black, Metric, Lights, and seriously…every other young Canadian superstar out there. It really is fantastic…I have my copy!
  • Going through Olympic withdrawel? I know you’re missing the Curling. Good news! It’s the Briers this weekend (the national curling championship) and your last chance to watch hours of curling this season. Check out TSN for all the heart-pumping action!
  • There are a BUNCH of new TV shows to check out this weekend! Be sure to schedule your time around the premiere of Celebrity Apprentice, and the newest game-show Minute to Win It on Sunday night!

Friday’s Olympic Schedule…

26 02 2010

I have a late-night medal update!
Congrats Joannie Rochette winning a BRONZE last night in the marathon finals of womens figure skating!

Here’s the NEW medal picture:

and the schedule for the day looks like this (its another doozy my friends!)

12- Womens Curling BRONZE: CHI v SUI

1-Womens snowboard

3- Mens Hockey Semis: US v FIN

3:30- Mens speedskating relay Quater finals

4- Four man bobsled heats

6- Womens curling finals: CAN v SWE

9- Short track speedskating 500m

10:25- Shortrack speedskating finals

The medal count should rise substantially again today, with a guaranteed GOLD or SILVER in Curling, and some great hopefuls in speedskating relays and 500m. And women are owning Freestyle snowboard/ski races for Canada, so never count them out! Go Hometeam…!

A golden day 8!

19 02 2010

End of Day 8…and it was a loooong one! No compaints here, infact, I’m still watching a few events as I write.

Here’s a recap of some notable events:

Figure Skating- Ice Dance
THose darn Russians…they come out of the womb skating! So no surprise that the Russian team is on top after the first compulsory dance. And after a beautiful, world-class skate Canadians Virtue and Moir are in SECOND only one point behind the leaders. This is a great place to be heading into the next dance, the Original skate. Oh, and those pesky Americans are in third…yikes.

Skeleton-
sounds morbid, but its just Luge…headfirst. In the Womens, Melissa Hollingsworth of Canada kind of cracked, and ended up in 5th. In the Mens, Jon Montgomery was Canada’s medal hopeful going in…and pulled out an incredible run! GOOOOOLLLLLDDD!!!!

**side note: The other canadian, Jeff Pain, has the COOLEST helmet…I want to see HBC use it in their next Olympic line…it’s called the “raging beaver“, and that name should say it all.

So the medal picture grows again today, looking kind of GOLDEN now!

Day 8…

19 02 2010

Its Friiiiiday! I had to look that up…I go by Olympic days, it’s day 8!

Here’s what I’m watching today:

12:30- Ski Jumping

2:30- Super G Skiing

6pm- Curling CAN v Denmark

8pm-Skeleton (finals)

9pm- Ice Dance figure skating

10pm-Womens Curling CAN v Denmark

10:30- Mens Skeleton (final)

Canadian Medal count could rise substantially today with hopefuls in the Supr G, Mens and WOmens Skeleton!

Watch it grow…

Help for Haiti Friday

22 01 2010

The world has been given a sudden jolt as we deal with the traumatic events that have ravaged Haiti. When we don’t know what to do, or how to help…our most creative and influential ban together to…put on a show! Thus, the power of television as a medium is revealed and put to good use. Tonight, spend some time watching the Help for Haiti telecasts, and allow it to compel you into action…in whatever means possible.

It’s a pretty extraordinairy line up in various countries around the world; here is a list of notables performing/lending their face for the cause:

Help for Haiti (the George Clooney brainchild) airing on all US networks: 8-10pm

  • George Clooney, Anderson Cooper and Wyclef (a haiti native) Jean will co-host the event.
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Alicia keys
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Coldplay
  • Taylor Swift
  • Madonna
  • Beyonce
  • Keith Urban/Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow perform a special song
  • Jay-Z, Bono and the Edge also perform a relief song.
  • Kanye West- will absolutly NOT be there…thank you.

Canada for Haiti Telethon: 7-8pm

All of the Big 3 networks (CBC, CTV, Global) have gotten together and will air a 1-hour commercial free special before the American version. George Strombo, Ben Mulroney and Cheryl Hickey will host—

  • Celine Dion
  • Justin Bieber
  • Nelly Furtado
  • Sarah McLaughlan
  • Barenaked Ladies
  • Simple Plan
  • Chantel Kreviazuk/Raine Maida
  • Metric
  • Other personalities include: Rachel McAdams, Alex Trebek, Jason Reitman, James Cameron, Mike Holmes, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Nash, Rick Mercer and Michael J Fox.

I think we can agree that the star-power and entertainment value is pretty impressive, and it’s 3 hours of commercial free TV (a very rare bird…). So enjoy it- but also dig deep. This is a nation that has had a rough go of it, both historically and presently. We need to take care of eachother…we’re all we’ve got.

Friday TV Night…

8 01 2010

Generally speaking, Friday is not the most interesting night to watch television (at times, that’s a severe understatement) but tonight is actually… an exception.
I’m not saying you should cancel all your plans for the evening, but thanks to a crammed Olympic schedule, we are seeing the Leafs play for the 4th time in 5 days (what is this? Baseball?!) along with a handful of other notables.

Here’s what I’m watching tonight:

Leafs vs Buffalo-

As previously mentioned, like it or not, we have seen the Leafs play 3 times already this week…and we will be subjected to it again tonight. The Leafs have tried everything to generate an iota of consistency; changing goalies, sitting players, tongue lashings, dodgeball games, bootcamps and media blackouts. There is no answer to the woes that haunt this team. Once only 2 points out of 8th spot (the coveted and only realistic position to shoot for), the Buds are now 8 points out (give or take) and are settling for maintaining Burke‘s pride and reputation as a year-end goal.

tonight, I hear Toskala is back in net (sigh…) and kessel has been in the doghouse all week…therefore, tonight is a game that will prove whether or not verbal abuse is an effective method of motivation. We shall see.

Wednesday night’s game was ugly (cringe worthy…), but as a Leaf fan by blood…I can only take the stance that things can only get better!

Tune in tonight, 7pm RSO.

Shark Tank-

I have urged TV fans to give the CBC’s Dragons Den a fair shake on wednesday nights- tonight, the American version of the (Canadian) franchise airs on ABC. Mark Burnett (of Survivor fame…) has gathered a bunch of successful American business minds (and snatched a few of the Canadian originals…) to host a panel where fledgling entrepreneurs get the chance to pitch their money-making ideas. The best part of ANY reality show is revealing the dilusions ordinary people, and exploiting the whack-jobs that want to be on TV…this show is full of them! Every now and then, someone has a great idea…but needs the capital to get it off the ground- and that’s where the “sharks” come in.

Give it a shot tonight (then also tune in for the Canadian version…) 8pm ABC

Other options:
Raptors play tonight at 8 on TSN
– Ghost Whisperer
returns to CTV at 8pm
New episode of Numbers is on Global at 10pm

Whatever you decide to watch, have a great TV Night.

Friday TV Night (or lack thereof…)

11 12 2009

My blog can only thrive on the decision of networks to actually put ENTERTAINMENT on the air every night! Therefore, the following post is dedicated to scrambling, pre-season programming put together by stations who think I won’t be in on a friday night…or that I enjoy seeing reruns of floundering (and redundant) police procedurals. sigh…

Here’s what I’m ( being forced into) watching tonight:

Spectacle: Elvis Costello interview Bono and the Edge-
Okay, this is slightly peaks my hipster interest…old blues/rock and roll legend meets old (and new) prog-rock do-gooders. You are destined to be a legend when your name is either: Elvis, Bono or “The Edge“…seriously. This interview as done in secrecy, in a backlot studio in Toronto (canadian content!) during the Film Festival this summer (not hard to be illusive when the rest of the city is in Yorkville scoping for a glimpse of Oprah). The difference between this “interview style” show and…every other…is that it takes itself very seriously and delivers. Most musicians go on “talk shows” and talk about a) their model wives, b) their “new album“, c) their drug problems and consequent stint in rehab or c) how famous they are. This show is musician to musician…peers talking good ole fashion music because they CAN…but most shows do not ask them to, or feel that the audience won’t be able to keep up. In this case, you are allowed to be an intelligent musical audience, a breath of fresh air.

so tune in for this one… there is lots of music talk,  impromptu musical performances/duets and a very laid-back-poetry-cafe feel…check it out, tonight CTV 10pm.

Sports:

Raptors take on Atlanta, TSN2 7:30pm
Olympic qualifying Curling, TSN 8pm

Christmas Specials:

Santa Clause 2, CBC 8pm
Letters to Santa, CTV 8pm

I told you it was sparse…if you have the option to go out…my advice is to take it tonight! There are some interesting things coming up this weekend, so stay tuned…it will get better!
