Wednesday Night TV Poll: September 21

22 09 2011

Wednesday has always been a great night for TV… however, it has recently been eclipsed by dominating TV shows on Monday, Tuesday and of course Thursday night.

This season, wednesday night is making a push for supremacy with juggernaut ratings shows like Survivor, Criminal Minds, CSI and now…. X Factor.

So what did YOU watch last night?

I actually watched most of those shows, I told myself NOT to watch the X Factor because I’m a one-singing-show type of girl.

I did tune in briefly, I think we were all curious. There has been no REAL explanation of this show and why it is relevant. I think it wouldve been ballsier to air X Factor along with American Idol to see who really reigned supreme. I also can’t really see the ‘big whopping difference’. It’s basically Americas Got Talent and American Idol with Pepsi as the lead beverage sponsor. That’s it. Simon infront of an audience isnt as good as Simon in a quiet judging room… crickets and awkward silenceĀ are much better than laughter onĀ TV, in my opinion. Paula is a wreck. The other male judge is soupy and uninteresting. Then… the other female judge changed halfway through the show to the latest judge making her rounds, Pussycat doll Nicole Sher-I’ll do anything-zinger.

There were the same sob stories about family, the same tears over a dream realized, precocious tweens and teens, give me a chance pleas, and people acting like nitwits to get on TV.

There are at least 4 other shows that give me that satisfaction… I’m not sure that I need another.

Thoughts? Did You watch X Factor last night?

If not X Factor, what wednesday night show did you tune in to? The premiere of CSI with the new lead, Ted Danson? What about the return of Criminal Minds and the shocking twist? (pssst… Prentiss isnt dead!) or Survivor where Coach and Ozzie continue to lead their tribes?

American Idol Finale: The Winner

26 05 2011

By now you know the Winner of AMerican Idol last night was Scotty McCreery.

Yes, I predicted wrong. I’m big enough to admit it!

But can we talk about the show last night? Results aside, what an absolutely unbeleivable way to end the season. The performances were ‘cant-miss’ kind of stuff! I mean,Beyonce, Lil JOhn and TLC, U2, Steven Tyler, Marc Antony, Lady Gaga, Judas Priest, Tom Jones, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Tony Bennett, Sheila E!

Holy smokes what a line up, what a finale! American Idol does it RIGHT!

So yah, Scotty won…congrats.

But I’m more excited about the fact that I watched a full 2-hour finale without switching channels because of mundane filler.

Can we also admit that it was nice to see some of the characters and talent from the past season back again? Who doesnt love Casey, and singing with Jack Black to Queen?!… epic. James singing head to head with Judas Priest?! Haley singing with the legend Tony Bennett? Jacob taking the stage with Gladys Knight and Kirk Franklin?!

Unbelievable pairings, fantastic entertainment of talent.

Are we happy with the results?

Get ready to hear that Scotty single on the radio today…

American Idol Wednesday: Top 12 Girls

2 03 2011

It’s ladies night on American Idol!

Lat night, the boys did their thing… now it’s time for the girls to do their ‘Thang!

I SO wanted them to bring it… to prove to me that this isnt a run away for the guys this season. Could the ladies rise to the occasion?

Some of them certainly ate the right Wheaties this morning…

Here’s my problem with many of the female contestants – there’s too much mimic. Too many of these girls want so badly to be Mariah, Kelly, Christina, Whitney, Alicia… that they’ve spent the better part of the past few years practicing lengthy vocal runs infront of their mirrors, and not enough time developing their own style.

We dont need another Mariah, Whitney or Alicia…we’ve got ’em. We’ve heard it all before, and we are now looking for something NEW! Do … You!

In my opinion, here’s my assessment of the performances tonight:

Awesome: Thia, Pia, Karen, Lauren A, Naima

Alright: Kendra, Haley, AShthon, Lauren T

Awful: Tatanisia, Rachel, Julie

So tomorrow night, 5 guys and 5 girls will make it directly into the Top 10. The judges will then select 1 girl and 1 guy to join them as ‘wildcards‘. Thus, your Top 12 will be born!

Wednesday Night TV : PVR Overload!

23 02 2011

When did Wednesday night creep up and usurp Thursday night on the TV Week Throne?

If you’ve got plans tonight that lead you away from your couch… you’ve got a few hours to make up a good excuse to cancel.

Tonight, you have the choice between:

2 Hours of American Idol – really, you have no choice, you HAVE to watch this show! Nigel Lithgow in his infinite reality competition show wisdom has created a new echelon for American Idol tonight. The Top 20 wannabes take the stage to perform BEATLES songs (yes, AI finally got the catalogue!) for their final push/audition. Nothing could keep me from indulging in this pleasure…

Survivor Redemption Island– except, perhaps…this show. Thank Goodness for PVR. Tonight, we will see how the Redemption Island format plays out. Currently, a lone woman has left the island for her Redemption stint, awaiting the arrival of another cast-off to fight for their lives in the game. Drama!

Criminal Minds/Criminal Minds 2 – that’s right, my guilty pleasure has grown another arm. Going the way of Law and Order, CSI and other successful ‘franchise’ shows…Criminal Minds has a new iteration starring Forest Whitaker (Oscar winner!), and CBS is airing them back to back.

and lastly… as if you weren’t already ordering in and leaving work early…

Americas Next Top Model – it’s ba-aaack! Feel like it just ended, and launched another poor waif into virtual anonymity in the fashion world? It’s useless and totally mind numbing… but it happens to be one of my favourite ways to relax after a long day of ‘real problems’. I can’t wait for more catfights, finger-wagging and Tyra-isms.

So, here’s the question for all you poor PVR-less TV Watchers (may I make a Christmas Gift suggestion?). Which show will you tune into tonight?

The Sing Off: Wednesday Week 3

15 12 2010

The Sing Off hit it’s final note(s) tonight… the last show before the LIVE Finale on Monday.

Here’s a recap:

Each group sang medleys of ‘superstars’, and a chosen song from the judges…

Jerry and the Talk of the Town: Brought down the house with their songs… Aretha Franklin and House of the Rising Sun. The judges got all emotional, and part of me thinks they are positioned to win this thing. A great back story, strong vocals and a memorable final performance (with a standing O to top it off) could just give them the edge!

Church Boys: Are still my favourite… but they got a raw deal from the judges. They were given Al Green, Let’s Stay Together… not a memorable song, not a particularly cool’ or ‘fresh’ song…but their voices were beautiful! They needed a show-stopper, and I’m not sure that they got the song to do it for them… but I love them. Just Sayin…

Cali’s: Try really hard. Maybe too hard. They did Gaga and tried to be quirky and ‘edgy’. Then they got Landslide, and ended up crying with raw emotion at the end. It was just predictable… I’m not a fan. Besides, has anyone noticed the beat-boxer looks like Justin Bieber? I mean… it’s uncanny!

Country Boys: Are slowly moving up the ladder in my books. They took on the Beatles, and being the biggest Beatles fan in a country mile, I was actually pretty pleased with the outcome. They also killed their judges song, putting some fresh flavour into it, and proving that they may also be the group to beat.

And the eliminated Group tonight was…

The Youtubers: Needed to step it up this week… but fell short. Although, their ‘Swan Song’ showed glimpses of genius I hadn’t seen previously from them…bad timing boys!

So… Monday night is the Live Finale… who’s gonna take it? Thoughts?

The Sing Off: Episode 2

8 12 2010

That’s right, our second dose of The Sing Off in a week… what is this? American Idol?

I’m guessing the race to end before Christmas has started, and all shows are getting ready to go out with a bang. The Sing Off will likely have their finale just in time for the big holiday.

Not that I’m complaining…I never complain about NEW content!

Here’s what happened on tonight’s episode:

Youtubers: Slipped a bit from their infamous Bad Romance performance. Great choreography again, but they need to work hard to compete with the stellar voices of the other groups.

Breakfast Club: No not , Bieber, but Bruno Mars this time. D’ya think this group has a ‘target market’? yeesh, and prom queen really needs to cut out the false emotion. Overall, stronger than monday night…but still not even in the running for best group.

Country Boys: picked it up a bit this week – and looked cooler doing it! I have to admit – I was away for most of the performance (I know! Hate mail is forthcoming…) but the judges gave them full props for a solid night.

Church Boys: Are slowly rising to the top of the groups…and becoming a personal favourite. Another fantastic rendition of a pop song, gone to church. Apologize was a huge song last year, and if possible, it sounds better acapella!

The Talk of the Town: The old boys are showing the other groups who REALLY invented acapella. That’s right Whiffenpoofs… these guys put the MO in MO-Town, and they can still upstage the youngins! I smiled the entire way through their performance of Duffy… so cool.

Cali’s: continue to use the same Beyonce-wannabe as their ‘lead’, and to be honest, I think she is trying to be a solo act and become a star on her own. BEyond that, the groups real star is the female (Bieber look alike) beat boxer.

Whiffenpoofs: May have ‘invented’ acapella… but they did not have the sameWhiff or Poof as they did on monday. They were a little flat, and the judges gave them vanilla praise.

Grooves: This lead singer has the charisma and the talent to truly LEAD this group through the competition. Although I thought the song was a little messy and disjunct… they have a very specific sound that distinguishes them from the rest….never a bad thing!

Who went home:

The Breakfast Club and WhiffenPoof

I for one, am OK with that ruling. Thoughts?

Survivor Recap: wednesday night weakness

2 12 2010

It will be very difficult for me to recap wednesday night’s Survivor

But I will… of course.

Why you ask? BEcause most of the events that occurred in this week’s episode go against everything I love about this show. And because, I will have to use the phrase “After 20-odd seasons…” more than once to prove my point.

After 20-odd seasons... don’t they make people sign “I’ll stay on the Island until I get voted off” contracts?!

After 20-odd seasons... arent people aware that rain is comfortable and inevitable?

After 20-odd seasons… don’t they background check for crazies?

After 20-odd seasons… don’t the producers realize that quitters cheapen the show?

This was one of the worst episodes of Survivor I’ve ever eaten Pringles infront of. Seriously.

Here’s how it went down:

It rained. ALot. It profusely poured pushing everyone into the shelter to shiver and gripe about how death would be easier. And I’m thinking, “this happens every season, it shouldn’t be a shocker at this point“. The complaining was juvenile and over-dramatic – a consequence of having girls too skinny for outdoor survival, and girls who are used to sprinklers on finely coiffed lawns. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have been just as irritating, but I’m NOT on the show…for that reason.

So Nay says, enough is enough, I’m giving my Idol to Chase and getting the heck outta here. Real mature. I’ve never been a Nay-Fan… but one of her strengths was sticking to her guns. Now she has absolutely NO redeeming qualities.

At the challenge, Nayonka makes the Grecian-esque announcement of her plan to nobly quit… and so does Kelly! Where did that come from?! 2 people AT ONCE want to leave 3/4 of the way through? By the way, they insist that they aren’t ‘quitters’ or ‘quitting’ – so I hope you didn’t think that’s what they were doing…that would be unfair.

Jeff is shocked, and urges them to wait until Tribal Council for their final decision on the matter.

Alas, things don’t change much in a few hours, and at Tribal Council Jeff calls out the two… and the jury is shocked! Nayonka pups out a speech about being a ‘strong black woman who doesnt quit’…but would really like to leave. When did being black have anything to do with you…QUITTING!? I guess white-Kelly has an excuse…she’s white.

So they both walk away from the game, and I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth. Terrible display of weakness…
